    1% Propoxur RB

    [Properties]

White crystalline powder with a slight distinctive odor.

    [Solubility]

Solubility in water at 20°C is approximately 0.2%. It is soluble in most organic solvents.

    [Uses]

Propoxur is a systemic carbamate insecticide with contact, stomach, and fumigant properties. It strikes quickly, with a speed comparable to that of dichlorvos, and has a long-lasting effect. It kills ectoparasites, household pests (mosquitoes, flies, cockroaches, etc.), and stored-warehouse pests. A 1% suspension spray at a dose of 1-2 g of active ingredient/square meter is effective for controlling assassin bugs and is more effective than trichlorfon when used with fly bait. The last application to crops should be 4-21 days before harvest.

    [Preparation or Source]

O-isopropylphenol is dissolved in dehydrated dioxane, and methyl isocyanate and triethylamine are added dropwise. The reaction mixture is gradually heated and cooled to allow crystals to precipitate. Adding petroleum ether completely precipitates the crystals, which are then collected as propoxur. The byproduct urea is washed with petroleum ether and water to remove the solvent, dried under reduced pressure at 50°C, and recrystallized from benzene to recover propoxur. The formulations include: technical product, with an active ingredient content of 95-98%.

    [Consumption Quota (t/t)]

    o-Isopropylphenol 0.89, methyl isocyanate 0.33, dehydrated dioxane 0.15, petroleum ether 0.50.

    [Others]

It is unstable in strongly alkaline media, with a half-life of 40 minutes at pH 10 and 20°C. Acute oral toxicity LD50 (mg/kg): 90-128 for male rats, 104 for female rats, 100-109 for male mice, and 40 for male guinea pigs. The acute dermal toxicity LD50 for male rats is 800-1000 mg/kg. Feeding male and female rats a diet containing 250 mg/kg of propoxur for two years produced no adverse effects. Feeding male and female rats a diet containing 750 mg/kg of propoxur for two years increased liver weight in female rats, but had no other adverse effects. It is highly toxic to bees. The TLm (48 hours) in carp is over 10 mg/L. The permissible residue level in rice is 1.0 mg/L. The ADI is 0.02 mg/kg.

    [Health Hazards]

It is a moderately toxic insecticide. It inhibits red blood cell cholinesterase activity. It can cause nausea, vomiting, blurred vision, sweating, rapid pulse, and elevated blood pressure. It can also cause contact dermatitis.

    [Environmental Hazards]

It is hazardous to the environment.

    [Explosion Hazard]

    It is flammable and toxic.
